  1. #1 Best Colleges in TexasRice UniversityHouston, TX·4 Year·Rating 4.09 out of 5 1,122 reviewsGraduate Student: Going to Rice University to attend the Shepherd School of Music at a graduate level is an experience separate from the rest of Rice. The Opera Department at Rice University has been one of the best programs in the United States producing incredible singers in the industry for a while now. Financial aid has been decreasing from full rides to having to pay a couple of thousands to attend +fees for a Master of Music. It is case by case, however.Pros: BEAUTIFUL theater that is incredible to sing in, program's very YAP reminiscent (in good and bad ways), world-class faculty, great networking opportunity, masterclasses/private audition opportunitiesCons: your soul/free-time belongs to the Opera Department; if a release conflicts with the opera schedule, tough luck; there have been many issues with casting opportunities/favoritism; if you're a person of color, be prepared to be a token on all promo material; TOO many irrelevant time-consuming academics; having a car is a MUST in Houston... 2. #2 Best Colleges in TexasUniversity of Texas - AustinAustin, TX·4 Year·Rating 4 out of 5 6,784 reviewsSophom*ore: I really love the city of Austin! The "weirdness" of Austin jumps out at you in the best way. The countless times I've gone to the groovy thrift stores or south Congress Ave with friends have been some of the best moments of my young life. The culture at UT is one of a kind as well. I feel that every person attending college feels a certain amount of pride in their school, like its a part of their identity almost. With UT its that and then some. Being from Maryland, experiencing the lone star state has been otherworldly. The pride in Texans and in the school is like no other, and it has certainly rubbed of on me. Though I am only a sophom*ore I am a Longhorn though and through! On top of the great city, the larger than life students, the sports and the like, UT is an academic institution first. Classes can be tough, and you feel it. Having to juggle social life with the grueling curriculum is something I had to work very hard for and still haven't quite got the hang of yet.... I honestly did not know what to expect at first I had mixed feelings since I knew no one at Tech. During welcome week I grew familiar of the campus, fond of the people, and a sense of belonging and school pride. I loved my first year! I was able to study in multiple areas on campus, attend supplemental instruction and gain more practice and reaffirm me knowledge of the material in class. I found out the best way I retain material and what study habits worked best for me. Overall, I have only a few things I would change. I had a roomate issue which escalated and it was reported multiple times, but housing took a while to resolve the issue. Another thing I would like to see is a reinforcement in quiet hours in the dorm because at 2-4 in the morning the dorms were unusally loud on weekends and weekdays.... If you're looking for an involved community I highly recommend living there. It is a two-year contract, but definitely worth it. Overall professors are nice and they enjoy what they are teaching. There are also so many clubs and events throughout the year so you're never bored. The best dining hall is 100% East Village. Penland is good depending on what you get, but sometimes meat is undercooked and there was an issue at the beginning of the year where people got food poisoning from it. Brooks has the best staff, and Memo has a couple of good stations but mostly is pretty mid. Baylor is so generous with Scholarships and Financial Aid for the regular school year, but just know if you're taking Summer classes, there are only loan options unless you're graduating early. Then there is an option to apply your academic scholarship to the Summer tuition as long as you're in good standing.... I was able to go out of my comfort zone. I liked that there was so many activities for me to do at the student center. There were also so many special events like listening to a celebrity talk about their experiences, or going to art shops and making something for free. There would even be movie nights where you can watch new movies with other students. One of the other things I liked is how green it is on campus. They have a lot of environmental stuff going on and they use wind turbines to help power the school! I really like going to school at UNT but I would like to have some changes to make it better. Some of the roads around campus need some construction work. It makes it really hard to drive around certain parts of campus because of this issue. Another issue is that housing needs to be more organized. It’s hard to get a room if you’re an upperclassman. There needs to be a dorm that houses upperclassmen.... I am in my second semester here, and I do not regret coming to this campus. The professors are so nice and understanding. I am in an education major, and I am so glad to have the support I need from my professor and advisor. I have joined a few different organizations, which has helped me grow as a person and helped me come out of my shell. I am an Orientation leader, secretary of TSTA (Texas State Teachers Association), and HLI (Hawk Leadership Institute). The environment here is an added bonus to my education. There are so many different beautiful animals that live around the campus. I love going on walks on the trails and relaxing after a long day of classes. The one thing I would like to see more on campus is more events and organizations for education majors. Sewell Park is in walking distance, which is a great place to relax in the sun with your friends. The square is also a great place to catch a bite to eat and explore shops on the weekends, or go to the bars at night! The academics quality at Texas State definitely differ on programs. They care about their students and want to help each student do the best they can. Now being in a specific program, I can say that even though the work load changes, most of the professors stay focused on UIW's mission to help students and be supportive and inspiring throughout your time there. I lived in the dorms for my first two years there and the experience was great for the most part. 22. #20 Best Colleges in TexasLeTourneau UniversityLongview, TX·4 Year·Rating 3.73 out of 5 710 reviewsSophom*ore: I have been loving LeTourneau University! I was really hesitant when coming here because of how different it would be from home, but I was instantly welcomed by the peer advisors, RAs, RDs, and my SLA. The academics have been challenging as you would expect from a predominately STEM school, but there are so many resources that are available, and the professors have very broad office hours and are willing to help. The student life is fantastic and there are events every Friday so that students can become plugged in. However, one that I wish would change for the better is the residence and food situation. For the amount we have to pay, the food and housing situations are relatively poor. There are problems with mold, card readers breaking, and bats in the halls, and there are problems with uncooked and flavorless food. Overall, I really enjoy the Christian atmosphere LeTourneau offers and I would have never wished to attend somewhere else.... 24. #22 Best Colleges in TexasAbilene Christian UniversityAbilene, TX·4 Year·Rating 3.81 out of 5 1,448 reviewsAlum: There is something ACU promotes at new student orientation called the "ACU Difference." It is meant to shine a light on the interpersonal network, mentorship, education, and spiritual formation ACU provides in comparison to other college experiences. This phrase ringed true in my time there, so much so I know work at the institution! As a Biblical Studies major in smaller classrooms, my professors became steady mentors with authentic connections and support. The campus provided spiritual formation through chapels, worship nights, and counseling opportunities thought theological deconstruction and reconstruction. Campus life provided fun intentional events and organizations that spurred joy and belonging, alongside friendships that will last a life time!... Professors here, for the most part, love their job and want to see you succeed. While a smaller campus than some, the size allows you to find your footing in a safe environment with lower stakes. However, Tarleton's recent advancement has caused some problems in recent years. Parking and housing issues have evolved into full on crisis with little care or involvement from the school.... The professors that I had the opportunity to meet were all very qualified. When it came to organizations on campus there were a wide array of options for students that have every interest. The campus is also very diverse with individuals from every background which allows students the opportunity to learn about other cultures. Housing is also very easy to find as long as you apply in a timely manner with high quality dormitories and on campus apartments. The only downside is the campus food when it comes to cafeteria food. The food is typically very low quality so I would recommend eating at campus restaurants and buying groceries instead. Overall this campus really is a hidden gem!...
