A Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge today, ordered a Kenosha man, David T. Deberge, to spend the next 30 years in prison. Judge Angelina Gabriele handed down the sentence today after Deberge was found guilty of “Repeated Sexual Assault of a Child” and another serious sex crime felony by a unanimous jury. Deberge worked as a substitute teacher for KUSD for 34 years, and was a jail chaplain.
According to the criminal complaint, and evidence presented at trial, Deberge sexually assaulted a girl from the fourth grade to the eighth grade. The assaults started as touching over the clothing and progressed to under the clothing. He then forced the girl to perform oral sex on himself many times. He would take pictures of her in the shower and do other terrible things. Deberge told the girl that she had to perform sexual activity on him as a form of discipline. Deberge also told the girl that her mother knew and that she didn’t care.
Kenosha County Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Smathers asked for the maximum penalty allowed by law today.
“As the court is aware, and sat through the jury trial, the defendant was convicted of repeated sexual assault of the same child… when she was between the ages of 9 and 13 years old. It started with touching over the clothing on her breasts and her stomach and hips. Then it slowly progressed to touching under the clothing on her breasts and her vagin*l area. It progressed to penetration with fingers and having [her] touch and fondle his penis. And finally, culminated in having [her] perform oral sex on him.”
Smathers told the court that it wasn’t until the child went to sex ed, that she realized what was happening was wrong. Smathers called the victim a “remarkable young woman.” She told the court that the victim only came forward because she suspected that Deberge had another victim in his scope and she didn’t want someone else to suffer how she did.
The court room was packed with supporters who Smathers addressed by saying “And I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the David that these individuals know is the one who is reflected in the [21] letters of support… However, the man that you truly are is the one who you are behind closed doors – the one who you are when the lights are off. The one who you are when no one believes that anyone is looking. And that is who Mr. Deberg truly is. The man who sexually assaulted his [victim] for years and almost got away with it.” At one point a supporter made an outburst during the sentencing, that sparked a quick rebuke from the judge. “If you’re going to talk, you can leave the courtroom,” said Judge Gabriele.
“We intend to file an appeal, and so we’ve advised [Deberge] to not make a statement to the court” said one of Deberge’s attorneys, Carl Johnson. Johnson asked the court to order 6-8 years in prison citing Deberge’s lack of criminal history and his community service.
“Twenty-one letters of support, and all I can think is how little they know you. What a secret you have hidden from them,” Judge Gabriele said to Deberge. “[The Victim] came to court. She testified. She was cross-examined. She was basically called a liar to the jury. Witnesses testified on behalf of Mr. Deberge, calling her a liar, saying she was dishonest. But the jury saw through all that, and they reached their verdict.”
With that, Judge Gabriele ordered 30 years in prison. Deberge, if he lived that long, will be 97 when he leaves prison.
As Deberge was ushered out of the courtroom, many people in the gallery yelled “We love you David!” One man said aloud, “I guess you can make things up and get away with it.”

I like your snarky replies but you represent yourself as a Christian. As a fellow Christian and admirer of your work, I encourage you to remember Ephesians 5:4, among many other verses, they tell us to be careful and how we speak.
“Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”

Thank you for writing the story. For the people who believe that organized religion, and all Christians are bad, they are not, but all Christians are not pedophiles, and some Christians are able to call out the evil that lives among them. To the victim, who had the courage to speak out, I salute you.

All the Christians that she spoke told her that her mom and her were crazy and problematic, even alcoholic. All lies to protect him. The pastors did absolutely nothing when ask for help. At court one looked at mom and said, “ she has no friends “. ( she was alone in court). All Christian’s are just like him.

I have known Dave for a long time I knew way back in the downtown KYF he was sneaky n was always using his Christian ways to try n hit ob women from the jail.
I dated one girl n he didn’t like that because he had a crush on her n would tell her I was no good n the devil. Umm look where you are now. The people who supported him I’m sure have faults of their own n are the type who think a preacher can do no wrong we all fall short of God even you. That’s why I never could keep attending church to many 2 faced people not all but many. I use to see Dave bring the child in the men’s locker room n he would be hollering at her n say you know better then the look on her face was sad now I know why. Prayers for that girl.10

Here are things to think about in this case from family and friends with the insider scoop.
For one thing, none of these charges came about in previous years only when apparently his biological daughter could no longer live with the mother and the step sister and she wanted to live with her father Dave. That ensued Dave to hire an attorney to represent his daughter and in the interim they find out about the stepdaughter’s abuse which she had never mentioned before and maybe she never would have but it seems pretty odd that all the sudden it comes up and all the while the ex-wife loses child support on the biological daughter. Moreover to question if he knew he was guilty of what he was being accused of, all the time that he was freed after the first jail sentence, IF HE KNEW HE REALLY DID IT, and that truth spelled jail, he could have hightailed and left the country.
Here are other thoughts, if he professes to be such a Christian his guilty conscience would not let him lie. In most cases, and for him to have lied is like renouncing his faith!
There are things that none of us know. Sometimes the guilty get away with it and the innocent get charged.

You honestly think that a Christian can’t lie because their conscience won’t let it happen? You’re clearly very unobservant. Christians are absolutely fundamentally no different than anyone else.
1
Reply
Re-read what I said. I’m not denying that christians are susceptible to lie, but some of us would feel guilt while others maybe not… Either way, to do so, is still renouncing one’s faith.
In Dave’s case, while all the time I have personally known him, which has been years, I have never known him to lie or have ever caught him in a lie!
